Bangladesh got six steps back in a year in internet speed and cybersecurity

Despite a 41% increase in fixed internet speeds and 23% increase in mobile internet speeds compared to a year ago, the global average speed of Bangladesh has decreased by 5%. Similarly, the mobile internet speed of Bangladesh is 73% and broadband speed is 31% behind India. Overall, Bangladesh is now ranked 82nd out of 121 countries in the world in internet speed and security; that is 6 steps down than the previous year which places 25th position in Asia.

This information has been reported in the latest annual report of the Digital Quality Life Index (DQL) of Netherlands-based SurfShark. In this situation, neighboring India is ranked 25th in the DQL index, up seven places from last year.

DQL has prepared its report based on open-source information of the United Nations, the World Bank and other organizations. Five indicators or factors have been taken into consideration to prepare the report.

According to DQL, the average speed of fixed internet in Bangladesh is 53 Mbps and the average speed of mobile internet is only 20 Mbps.

Singapore currently leads the world in terms of fixed internet speed in this index. The fixed internet speed in this Southeast Asian country is 300 MPBS. The UAE tops the list in terms of mobile internet speed. Mobile internet speed is 310 Mbps in this Country of the Gulf region of the Middle East. The country at the top of the list is Venezuela. The speed of mobile internet in this South American country is only 10 Mbps.

In 2023, the quality of internet in Bangladesh increased by 0.36%, electronic infrastructure by 65% and e-government by 0.58% compared to 2022. But cybersecurity deteriorated by 0.36%.
